Ok, so its been a long time since I've started a tank from scratch. I just moved and only have my 29 gal nano set up. I've used cleaned and dried up live sand (now dead) and dead LR that I nuked a long time ago. My question is if it would be beneficial to add some of my seeded LR which is currently at a buddies home and some of my sand from that tank to speed up the nitrogen cycle, seeding of beneficial bacteria to LR and sand???? Also, do I need a fish (chromis) to start the nitrogen cycle or will reef janitors do it? I eventually want clowns but don't want to take the chance of them dying during cycling....

    Thanks

yes, you do need to seed the base-rock (old LR) to get the beneficial bacteria in the tank. also cycling with fish is considered very cruel now. most people will tell you to just drop a uncooked shrimp in the tank and let it rot out, starting the cycle. if you let the shrimp do the cycling then you won't have to worry about killing any fish.

Or you could jest add some fish food if you have any frozen jest put a cube in. If its dry food it will take a little longer but will still work. You will have to add some very few days tell you start seeing nitrite.
