Getting ready to seed my tank for coraline algae. Anyone know of a product that contains the spores to do this? Otty had mentioned he'd get me a rock to do this with but after looking at his tank none of his rocks are easily removed. Figured it would be easier to do it with a bottled product.

No bottled product that I know of. Best bet is to get a piece of LR or snail/crab shell & scrape at it in your tank which will release the pores.

Don't use Purple Up. It only helps feed coralline & will cause issues with your pH.

I don't know of any product that does this. Purpleup has the elements necessary to grow coraline, but you need it first.

It will happen on its own, never used any bottled product for it. Take some glass scrapeings or some off of a powerhead

Should be some coralline spores in Scott's sand? Or maybe he can scrape some coralline off of his glass (catch the coralline "flakes" with a brine shrimp net) and you can use that?

Hey Amcarrig do you know if most live sand contains coraline spores? My original plan was to start this tank up with all base rock and base sand but after talking with Roger and Scott I think I'm going to use live sand. I'm running up to Premium Aquatics tomorrow so if the live sand has the spores I'm good to go.

Have him check his filtration equipment. I've got huge plates of it in my fuge and sump. If you think it would be cheap and easy enough, I can send you a couple of nice chunks. The coralline in my sump is a dark pinkish color. I can see a plate the size of a silver dollar sitting at the bottom now.

I don't think that commercial, bagged live sand has anything but live bacteria in it. If Premium Aquatics sells their own brand of live sand, it's possible that it does contain spores but then you're running into the same potential problem(s) that you would have if you used live rock. Does Scott not have any coralline on his glass that you can scrape and bag? Or, can you maybe scrape his rock while it's still in his tank and catch the scrapings with a brine shrimp net?

I don't know if Scott has any on the glass. I know he does on the overflow. I would bet he's got some in his sump as well. ;D I've got some on a piece of live rock I put in my QT tank but I'm half scared to put ANYTHING from the QT tank into the display. If I get bryopsis in the new 180 I'm going to shoot myself. :pissed::rifle:
