Use a separate pump to drive a protein skimmer. Protein skimmers supply varying resistance to the pump due to "scum" build-up inside the skimmer body and valves, as well as partially-clogged venturis and collection chamber vents. If the same pump returning water to your tank from a reservoir is also driving your skimmer, you will find yourself constantly adjusting valves to adjust your skimmer collection rate.

Raise your hand if you have one pump and need to constantly adjust your valves?
I just got my Reeflo Dart pump and was planning on running everything with it.
I really don't see it being an issue but was wondering as I've always had a separate skimmer pump. ... and I have to adjust valves anyway.

I used to run everything off of a Iwaki 70 Pump. This would be a return, Beckett skimmer and remote deep sand bed. I never had any issues with adjusting anything other than the occasional cleaning of the Beckett.

My new system runs on a reeflo snapper , but my skimmer is now fed via the return not the pump. Hope this is the information you are looking for.

my last in-sump skimmer was pump driven with a needle wheel impeller, i had to constantly adjust it to keep it skimming cause I dont yet have an ATO setup yet. my new skimmer is an old modded recirculating ASM G3 that I feed off my return and this thing rocks! it never has to be adjusted due to evap and is skimming like a champ after only a week in my system.

I dont think i'll ever get another skimmer that uses the same pump to feed it and make bubbles ever again.
