I have a few questions about starting a frag tank,I can't plumb one into my DT due to lack of space,so it has to be separate i am planning on using a "40 breeder" with a sump.I am wondering if i could have all live rock, sand, macro in sump and just have a BB tank with a couple racks, would cycling be the same as a regular tank? Even though there will be no fish?Any input advice would be great!

    Frag tank

Is there anyway you can pump your DT into your new setup, and then pump it back to DT. I ask because that IMO would help as far as cycling time.

I'm talking permanently pump from DT to FT and back, and maybe cut cost with extra sump extra etc. Now if it was a hospital tank duh i wouldn't tell you this. Now if your space is so small that you cant have FT next to your DT then this wont work.

Hope it's an ideal for ya,
    Mike

The problem is that i cant have it in my living room where the DT is.My wife wasn't too keen on the idea. And where i want to put it is too far away to run plumbing.

    New FT

Well i guess you could do a new complete set-up. But reverse it..

Meaning you would have to have main FT+Sump.. No big deal..

Just pretend that the sump is really a DT and your FT is the sump..

In fact your new FT would be just nothing but frag racks, and your sump would looking like a DT. WOW so maybe 2 large tanks..Man maybe someone with a brain can help you out..

Sorry if your more confused now, " I am"

Thanks coolridernum1 I understand what you are saying my primary question is when it comes to cycling and filtration.since it will be coral only with little to no bioload with the exception of occasional feedings would there need to be the same rules as far as live rock 1.5 lbs per gallon etc?would a skimmer be 100% necessary?

No live rock is needed. Shove 10 or 15 bioballs into the foot of a pair of panty hose and sink it down with a rock of some sort. If this isn't convenient, you could also use something simple like a hang on back biowheel for your biological filtration.

If you're doing SPS frags, I would recommend a skimmer.

I would probably leave it bare bottom unless you are fragging LPS corals that need sand like brains, plate corals, etc. It's been my experience, however, that most people are afraid to frag those types of corals.

if no live rock is needed just some bioballs or LR rubble i am assuming there would be very little in the way of cycling no?What about some sand in the sump for buffering?

    Correct

The amount of buffering obtained from sandbeds has been GREATLY EXAGERATED
