I have 4 of the modded maxi-jets tied into a JBJ wave controller on my big tank. Works very, very well.

You don't have startup chatter or reversing of the prop issues??

if yer gonna run a sump u need to drill yer tank mate the only other option is canister filters, as said before after market overflows are a disaster waiting to happen.

alls i can suggest at this point is canister filters and a hang on back skimmer.

edit: my first tank was undrilled with a canister filter and a hob skimmer, it worked, looked crap and i had alost of issues with salt creep on the walls which destroyed them hence the new system i have which is much cleaner to look at and doesnt damage the house lol

I would never run a tank with a over the rim over flow... Just like stated, it is flood waiting to happen. I run a drilled overflow and closed loop with a Ocean Motion valve and have yet to hear this is a "thing of the past". If engineered right it will use a lot less energy then a bunch of cluttered power head, or streams in the tank. When you step over the 180g range of tanks, things change a bit. Watch taking advice from people running small tanks as most have no clue what it takes to move water over a 7' to 8' span. Done been down that path and had to upgrade pumps as it take more pump then what you think to move that much water.

Even if the tank is done I would still have it drilled. Every person I know of who uses an overflow has had a problem with it. I setup an overflow between a 10 gallon fuge and my sump and after 2 months it overflowed all over the living room floor. They are a great way to piss off your significant other.

okay can i have a internal over flow box on the side of my tank in the centre?
becuase i have bracing on the bottom of my 8x2x2 so it stops me from having a corner overflow box as it will not sit flat on the aquarium because of the bracing.

    does that make sense?

I agree powerheads look cluttered but drilling for closed loop sounded too tricky for me. Also the amount of energy burnt to do a closed loop with a pump like a reeflow dart far exceeds what you would burn with multiple powerheads. If you have a dedicated CL pump. Koralia 6 only burns 10W at 2200 GPH..completely silent and can be run on a wavemaker. Take a look at my tank pics and see that I have overflow on the side. I have one of the new big Koralia 6 right in front of that overflow and I can't see it. So things can be hidden well if thought out. It's not in the corner it's in the middle side...downside would be it takes up room depending on your layout you may not like that. Also I would definitely have it drilled at least for overflows. You will be very glad you did. Do have a picture of the tank?
I have a foam block in my sump and would recommend not doing that. Get a sump/refugium that avoids that. Otherwise you'll be cleaning it at least once a week and usually more. I have to keep the foam in there because of my sump design. I don't have a refugium with the bubble trapps. If I had it to do over I would go that route. But you will need some sort of sock or mesh to keep snails and big stuff from getting into the pumps.
Good powerheads vary a lot on how much you want to spend. I'm really happy with my Koralia 6 and 4's.
