Okay, so im thinking about purchasing two young bamboo sharks. For right now, i have a 55 gallon tank. Im planning on getting a bigger tank though as they grow...

    My question is,
What is the best way to start the setup for my tank, i have a 4 in sand bed, (it was live sand at one point), and about 50 lbs. live rock(different kinds). Anyone who can help me out let me know

    Thanks

The only advice I can give is, don't do it. That tank is going to be too small so fast it will shock you. Also you are going to need at least that much rock to filter for these messy eaters. The problem with that is keeping the rock in the display will not give them adequate room to rest in the sand. You would need a sump big enough for all the rock so you can have the entire 55 open sand for them. I'm not usually the voice of complete opposition on here, but this one time I'm going to say this is a terrible idea that has little to no chance of doing more than costing you money and heart ache.

They grow to 40" in the wild, which means at least 30" in captivity. You need a tank at least 1 1/2 times their length both ways. That's just for one. The problem with any stock size tank and sharks is they can't turn around in such narrow tanks. To truly keep a shark long term you have to come to grips first with the fact you will be ordering a custom tank, will need a huge sump for rock and are going to need one monster of a skimmer.

It seems like you like the idea of a predator, so how about a snowflake eel? You would have plenty of time to upgrade and IMO they are much, MUCH easier to care for. They put on an awesome hunting show with ghost shrimp even after they are spoiled on frozen food. They are also very easy to train to eat frozen foods, live happily with live rock and some fish, much cheaper and much easier to find.
