Anyone else keeping them? If so, do you think shell on shrimp is enough to file down their teeth? He has been pretty good to my snails so far on the shrimp, but I worry about having to perform dentistry at some point...

i own a green spotted puffer, so long you give them hard shelled foods you shoulnd't have to perform dentistry. I haven't given my puffer marine nails or shrimp yet but i give him ghost shrimp and freshwater snails and they work fine for him. So shelled shrimp should be ok, just give him a lot i guess and try to keep an eye on his teeth.

I am not sure about sharpnose puffers (dont know what they are) but I have a Golden Puffer. I give her krill, clams, and raw shrimp (with shell on) Everyonce in a while I will place a turbo snail or other hermits for her to eat.

She naturally grinds her teeth down by eating rocks. SHE LOVES them!

I think that might be an instinct for puffers...eat rocks to grind down teeth! Because there has been times where I think, Oh man, I am going to have to do a dental and then all the sudden she has them filed down

Post a pic of sharpnose sometime!

i mean shell on shrimp, put that the wrong way, I am used to eating shrimp more than feeding them I guess! Will have to see if he is eating rocks in the new system, would be cool if he filed his own teeth!

i have the sharpnose in a "curiosity" tank of mine. Ugly tank, but it has a lot of live food and good for keeping things calm. Observation tank to make sure the fish is eating and healthy etc.. but he has been in there for a bit of an extended stay now. He will make the move into a 72 reef soon with SPS, LPS, softies of the polyp, gorg, and mushie types so I will let you know if he nips. The French angel in that reef seems to only like the occasional expensive type zoa, can't be bothered with the brown palys that spread all over! :) Go figure....

I am horrible with pictures, but one day when I take all the pictures I have to take I will certainly include them. This is the species though:
canthigaster rostrata - Google Image Search

I know there are a few different puffers with the same name in the hobby that are from that genus.

Looks like some sort of species of saddle or toby puffer. Cute lil buggers :) I had a valentini for a long while and my boss recently added one to his FOWLR tank. Tons of personality and really smart too.

valentini...have to check that out. i like burrfish too, and porcupines.

scorpionfish huh? a few of them have almost given me a heart attack. Diving you don't see them until you are about to touch them, every time they dart out unexpectedly from me my heart jumps up into my throat! Cool looking fish though, their camo is amazing.

IMO they are one of the coolest fish I have ever owned, enough so that I am thinking about setting up a tank just to house one.

very similar to the atlantic sharpnose. Nice fish, cool colors. Puffers are smarter than most fish it seems, makes for a better pet.
