Hehehe... I've only had 2 skimmers in my entire life- a SeaClown (POS) and an Excaliber which actually worked, but I saw no difference in the tank. I'm skimmerless now with my new 29, and I only do 10% WC monthly.

I'm too fat and lazy for weekly water changes.

I have a 5.5 FOWLR and a mini in tank filter and I do water changes every 3 weeks.

It should be fine. I just scoff at the idea of removing automated maintenance for manual maintenance.
But what ever floats your boat.

    Good luck.

I went skimmerless for a few months when I had an ATS up. The water changes were a pain because I had such a large system. When I took off my ATS I turned back on my skimmer. Honestly both methods are good and was happy with both. I just feel safer with a skimmer for some reason. Good luck OP and I look forward to future updates :)

I ran a 20g with just a HOB fuge for a long time. For a tank under 40g unless you have a heavy bioload you could probably get away with just doing WC and keeping your fuge stocked.

I absolutely hated the hydor "slim" (not) skim. It was just a huge black tower in my 46 g. Plus it was loud.

Try both and you'll be really happy! Skimmer + scrubber + partial water changes = HAPPY TANK! I never understood why people feel like having a scrubber means you shouldn't skim or shouldn't water change.... (not saying that you feel this way, but many do)

Well I did my first WC since going skimmerless and using a white bucket I was able to see that......there was no change in the color of old water at all. Meaning it was just as yellow without the skimmer as it was with the skimmer. I'm seeing no ill effects at all :) All parameters are the same=stable. Which says to me the skimmer wasn't doing squat for my tank :)

I did run both for awhile. It ended up being too much filtration and my corals were suffering. When I went to only one method they colored up.

My ATS was actually too efficient and removed everything from the water column, lol. I'm planning on making another one but only 1/5 the size of my previous one. lol

Loud, hmm, I haven't heard that. And sorry nana the hydor didn't work out for ya! That being said, I pull mine offline after water changes and only turn it on the last few days before a WC, but I do a WC of about 10% every week to week and half. I think mine was keeping the water too clean. Hope it works out for ya.
