Shipping to the Caribbean

Hi all, I live in Trinidad, that's at the bottom of the Caribbean chain. I know I can just dive and get my livestock for free but I don't want to take that chance. I don't wanna get caught lol... I want to order some of my livestock online but I don't know what are the possibilities of fish and anemoes arriving alive. Has anyone here shipped from or to the lover Caribbean before? And what's the average cost?

 

unfortunately, I'd have to say no!!! I wish I were in your shoes and had to wonder how to have corals inverts or fish sent to you from your backyard!!!!hahaha

No seriously, I don't have an idea. Possibly chech with a government official, as far as legal constraints go. Otherwise contact some of the many reef websites who will specialize in selling and shipping reef organisms.

 

How long have they outlawed removing fish from the reefs around Trinidad?
I wish they would outlaw it around the world and make everyone buy captive bred specimens.

 

Well I spoke to the "big guy" at work and he told me that for me to import coral and fish into the country, I'd have to go through lots of headache with customs so I don't think I'm gonna bother to import... I think I will just dive for it myself. Only in some areas of Trinidad it is illegal... There are many other beaches and coves where it is still allowed on the reef. So I'm gonna go get some as soon as I get my tank up and cycled (I'm kinda terrified of sharks tho and jellyfish and Rays) lol: ... Yeahhhh free rock lol;D

Well I'm not gonna cip off the rocks, I'm just goona get the rocks that are already broken off and just sitting there. How else do you get live rock? And it is legal in some beaches in Trinidad... Not all but only the one or two which arn't tourist destinations... If I pick from the tourist destinations like Maraccas Beach and Macareppe Bay then it is illegal and I would be seriously punished if caught. What other way do I get live rock besides taking it from the ocaen?:-[

 

Making it . Check out www.garf.org they have lots on info on "aragocrete" rocks. If you buy from them, they are $5 a pound. I am not sure if they ship to Trinidad tho.

I just made some myself. After you are done, get some bacteria in a bottle or something like that from you LFS to seed the rocks and you will have LR in no time

 

it is one thing to get some live rock from the ocean as broken pieces of rubble. But is entirely different to break off pieces from a reef. We all know about conservation and preservation of our wonderful reefs of the world. As mentioned before, possibly making your own live rock is an alternative, plus look at it this way, no shark problem, or possibility of stepping on a Stone fish or Sea Urchin...lol hope all works out for ya!

 

Storms regularly break off pieces of rock from the reef. Often taking very large pieces all the way into coves. Other times, storms do just the opposite. The Hawaiian cove that Dana Riddle of Riddlelabs is doing research in was recently swept clean off all sand and rock. He described some of the rocks as being boulder-sized. (I would NOT want to be on a boat during a storm that can move boulders).
