Usually done in 2 or 3 plastic bags to keep leakage down, with cooling or heating packs as needed and then placed into styrofoam boxes or bubble packs and finally boxed up in cardboard.

Also don't forget to label like "This side up", "Live Fish", "Perishable", etc.

We use UPS for most shipments. Sometimes we use USPS if they have next day delivery.
For expensive or sensitive items, we always use UPS. If you decide on UPS, do it through shipyouraquatics.com to save money.

I've mostly gotten stuff through FedEx. Some people say that UPS is by far more reliable, but I definitely wouldn't say that, at least for my area. They've hidden boxes inside our trash can, almost never knock on the door, and don't pay attention to the "This side up" labeling. FedEx always knocks, and hasn't left boxes sideways on the doorstep.

You really should find out from the person you're shipping to who is more reliable in their area, if it's not a regular or business type deal. If it's for a business, you get bulk discounts by using one shipper though, so it makes more sense to stick with one.

Taking any kind of liquids onboard an airplane is still a big "no-no" I think.
