I was wondering if many aquarist get shocked badly. I am a master electrican and look at the wiring on different photos of sumps and equipment. Some are kind of scary. You mix water and electrity and you get bad things. Not to say my wiring is up to safety of a public pool.

Beside using GFCI and separating circuits, what can you do? I worry sometimes and try to shut off the power to components when working in the tank, but not always. Can the electricity travel up my plumbing from the sump to the main tank when I am working? I usually just shut off all the PHs but not the sump equip.

BTW, in my future setups, electrical safety will be paramount. I actually think about this all the time. I am just not qualified to do much of the work myself.

electricity takes the path of least resistance adding to the fact saltwater is conductive
so if your system isnt set up properly, yup sure can right through the water.

That's what I thought. Generally, I use my plastic aquarium tongs whenever possible. Hopefully that keeps me safer.

As far as I am concerned, there is no safety guarantee when working with water and electricity. Of course, you are right about taking all the necessary precautions, though. Still, I will turn everything off every time or else use the tongs. I worry most about the heater.

The first step when installing a tank should be the installation of a GFCI outlet. Everything in my setup is powered from one. It never has tripped and I've never been shocked.

I'm a do it yourselfer. But I don't do electricity unless it's something like installing a light.
My brother-in-law wired his boat dock wrong and killed several neighbors years ago. Not something to mess with for me.
