gfci is a great start. Dedicated circuit is another. Ever think about your power usage on that exsisting living room circuit. May be you have a brand of breaker that does not trip at 15 or 20 amps but holds your heater, chiller, pumps, lights. Easley 2000watts and should trip most breakers but may not. This would be cause for a fire. Also a dedicated circuit (circuits)is less likey to trip and leave your tank in trouble.

It really depends on which surge protector you have. It is nearly impossible for a surge protector to withstand a nearby lightning strike because I don't think that any surge protector can withstand that much voltage. I think that unplugging stuff is the only way to protect computers from lightning strikes. I have my preferences when it comes to surge protectors but I don't really want to get into that right now. I used to rely on the cheap surge protectors but after having my computer power supply and motherboard ruined by a surge I am willing to spend $100 on a good surge protector.

There are surge breakers that you install in your panel that protect your whole house. They take up 2 spaces in your panel A phase B phase. They run about 60 to 120$. I install a lot of these usely after a strike has done damage. I have never had a house hit by lightning after one was installed. I don't know if they would work on an actual strike I wonder.
