I woke up Sunday morning to find there is no power going to my system. I quick look around and I see the GFI popped. I try to reset it but it pops immediately. OK something must be shorting out. So I start at one end and systematically pull the plug one at a time to figure out what's shorting. I get to the ground probe pull the plug hit reset and everything powers up. I think success there must be something wrong with the probe. The probe is held in place with a suction cup and when I reached into the sump to pull it I got one hell of a SHOCK. Well long story short it turns out there is nothing wrong with the probe the problem is this old MaxiJet pump that was shorting out. The weird thing is with the grounding probe in the sump the GFI popped immediately but when I took it out everything powered up and ran until I put my hand in the sump then it popped.

I'm glad you had a GFI. It is an absolute must.

I once got shocked from my heater in the Rubbermaid tub I use for premixing saltwater. Immediately went out and purchased a GFCI. It only took me one time, didnt like being shocked at all.

And pgreef I like your avatar. I live and surf at Pismo, one of the beaches he mentions in that scene, the last one just before he scatters the ashes all over Dude.

K+ for that Just make sure to get a GFI that matches your circuits amps, or at worst, go with a higher GFI than your circuit is rated for. Getting a 15 amp GFCI on a 20 amp circuit won't help you, but a 20 amp GFI on a 15 amp circuit works just fine.

You probably still have something shorting out, the ground probe gave it a path to ground. Stick a volt meter in your display and start plugging and unpluggings things, I''ll bet you find a pump or heater that is leaking voltage.
