Sorry, I assumed you had ferrets by your name.

 

Skimmer first, water can be found at an lfs or local club members could help out in an emergency.

 

Not all locations have clubs and not all stores sell water. In my area, the closest store that sells water is 70 miles away. Making it cheaper to buy water from the grocery store.

Is there a water store like Culligan nearby? I get my water from one of them and it only costs .15 cents a gallon. If not maybe the RO/DI would be the way to go.

 

Be careful with refrigerator water units. Many of the filters have additives that make the water "better" for us. I know some put flouride into the water. Not sure if that helps or hurts reef tanks or not but just mentioning.

 

whats weird is i have well water.. been using it for about 6 months and i clean my 270 gallon acrylic panels about once a week and its not hardly dirty... i was using rodi water on my 72 and had cyno .... hair algae etc....

now i know i have a good skimmer on my tank... which probably helps... but i sold my rodi unit because my well water pump wasnt strong enough...(i know they make booster pumps)

but anyways... this has been my best tank ever in 8 years.... and i have used phosphate reactors before with cheato.... etc...

even my wife says wow this tank has no hair algae... at all

so i would buy the skimmer first...
than rodi and etc...

 

and im only using two koralia 3s in this 270 ... i run a mag 24 pump for return.. it splits off into 5 tubes ....but thats it for circulation...
