Sounds like an external parasite of some sort. Depending on the severity, I'd sit it out and see if it goes away on it's own or, get busy on treating. There are a few different ways to treat. My way is to set up a temporary quarantine/hospital tank and treat with meds. and hyposalinity. Temp. hospital tank would be a rubbermade container, aeration, medicine, heater, light and powerhead.

+2 mission sounds like it may be ich, fw dip helped to clear mine up i would try that first before setting up a hospital tank, unless you already have a hospital tank (which you should::))

I have to respectfully dis-agree on the FW dip method. Chasing a sick fish around the tank, catching the fish, dipping into FW, and putting back into(infested) tank without acclimation. It's a very stressfull scenario to a fish that is already highly susceptible to stressfull situations. Doing a FW dip on a healthy clownfish or, grouper is alot different than doing one on a tang or, butterfly. I'd keep a close eye on the fish before doing anything. Watch the fish for sure signs of trouble. The parasite will likely kill the fish by attacking gills and suffocating the fish.

that is very true and if he is eating then i would not start to worry just yet if he stops then it may become time to take the next step, feed him as much as possible seeing as he needs lots of strength to fight the parasites

Soak your food in Vit C or Garlic is what I use and never see the problem any more. Also hang a piece of broccoli in the tank for them to chew on, it will not foul the water.

Non marine foods are not recommended for your fish. Frank Marini is one of many authors reporting that fish can't properly digest the non marine food such as lettuce and broccoli.
Better to get Nori from your asian food supermarket and put some pieces on a food clip in the tank. It will probably take some time for the fish to start eating it, but it will. In the meantime, change the piece of food daily to keep it from decaying and providing nutrient for unwanted growth in the tank.
Make sure the Nori is not spiced, just plain roasted.

Try galic and do water changes. If you do the whole chasing him around thing you will just stress him more. Try just keeping him healthy. Maybe he will kick it. My kole has it too. they just can't kick it.

Hey nybatu, i bought a baby hippo tang about 4-5 weeks ago...looked great for about a week and the got ich just as u are describing. Got it real bad, even gave it to a few other fish. U have to feed a wide variety of quality food soaked in garlic and vitamins. I used vita chem and seachem garlic, socked rods food (herbivore & regular blends, spectra pellets and even some of the flake food) I also have and give him all 3 algae sheets make by 2 little fishes...theres a red, purple and green. I did a couple water changes and even picked up a 9 watt uv sterlizer just as an added help for 60 bux. After a month of battling with the ich its losing its battle and the fish are looking almost perfect again. I wouldnt stress the fish out by chasing it or tearing yer tank apart. I also added 2 cleaner shrimp and a fire which all seem to like cleaning the fish. Turn the lites off in the tank to help eliminate stress...i kept mine on for maybe 3 hours a day. All these things are helping me win the battle with ich. Btw this is my 2nd time having an ich outbreak due to buying a hippo tang and it worked the 1st time and this 2nd time is on course for another ich battle won. good luck.....
