Should I buy a purple tang?

I have a 215 reef with a yellow tang, blond naso, hippo, clown, chromis and a niger trigger. My concern is everything I've heard and read about introducing a tang of similar shape ( especially a purple) to ones I already have in the tank. Once bought and put into the tank, the likelihood of catching him if there is real trouble is non existent. I'd rather not have one than risk injury to livestock. I would really appreciate anyone's opinion who has experience with this issue.

Probably a bad idea if the yellow tang is large and established. I had a choice between a yellow tang and purple tang and I'm glad I went with my purple. Mine is a bit skittish but if I threw a yellow in with him it would be dead in an hour. It's an expensive risk.

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. I love tangs and based on what I now have, I don't see where I can add any to my tank...

I have both. I have a Vlaminigi and yellow both over 4 years old. I put a baby purple in 2 years ago and it was fine. They are in a 180 with plenty of hiding places. It can depend of your tangs personality. If it shows aggression now it may be a problem. Even if not it is still a risk but it can be done. Keep them fed and they stay happy.

You're pretty lucky from what I keep hearing and reading. Just don't to endanger anyone.

I guess the problem is once you make that leap and put him in the tank, I won't be able to get him out if things get deadly. I can't risk that.

I have a 4 year old Hippo tang and I recently put a yellow tang of comparable size in with her and she picks on the yellow tang like crazy. If i could have done it over I wouldn't have gotten the yellow. I would be very careful about the purple. As awesome as they are it wouldn't be fare for the fish and would probably be a costly mistake.

Yellows are hit or miss with personality. I had one and it was passive.
Purples are sweet. But sounds like you have enough tangs already. Those things swim 250 miles a day in the wild
