O.K. guys! I've got a question for you.

I've been wanting to QT my fish for a few months now and replace my sandbed. I've wanted to find a 55gl long acrylic tank to borrow or to buy. Acrylic so that if I do buy one I could store it in the garage without worry about it cracking or the seals drying out and I could carry it since it would be lighter.

I just got back from Petland and tomorrow they are having an aquarium sale. They have a 55 gl long glass Oceanic tank with lights-bare basics, and a black stand with two doors. No, it is not reef ready but for QT it wouldn't matter anyway, I'd just use my magnum 350. What makes this appealing is that they are selling all of it for $199.00 which sounds like a really good price to me and I think I could put all 17 fish in it for QT.

Its not acrylic but is that a good enough price that I should consider buying it? ANd once I finish using it for QT whats the best way to store it? I really don't have room in my house for it full time.

What do ya'll think? Play a little devils advocate here.

I have had my 58 gallon oceanic tank in storage in the garage for about 5 years, and just set it back up a few months ago....it is just fine ;) In addition, I bought it used ;D

It is heavy as heck tho :-X

I like the thought of the long for QT...seem like the fish would have more lateral swim room

I was especially thinking about the lateral room for the tangs.

I'll have to sleep on it tonite and then decide in the morning.

I bought an existing tank and everything in it. Dumped out the sand to move it 130 miles and dumped it back in when we set the tank back up. Since April my nitrates and phosphates have been very high where they were normal with the previous owner. Despite the many, many water changes with ro/di the nitrates and phosphates are still high.I've been told by some its because of the sandbed. Its not from over feeding. If anything, in the beginning I was under feeding. Its been 8 mos now with the same problems so when I QT my fish I will also change out the sand bed. I'll be using Carib SEa. I'll use some of the old to seed with as well as some sand from some other tanks.
