I think adding a sump is always a good idea. I also have a 55 gal. reef and added a 20 gal. long sump. I put all of my equipment, heaters, skimmer, phosphate reactor, carbon reactor, into it. It adds to the water volume which is always good. As far as building it and expense, I bought the tank, acrylic panels, silicone and pump for a total of about $90, add another $20 for the pvc pipe and fittings. Works great.

A sump can be a great addition to a tank. It increases the total water volume and allows you to hid some equipment outside of the display tank. Now the best benefits of a sump are a better less expensive protein skimmer than a hang on the back skimmer, a place to setup a refugium. I think a fuge is a great addition to any tank, Most fuges should be called algae filters since the primary purpose of them is to grow algae to use up nutrients available in the system.

But the cost of the sump setup can be pretty high depending on what you do, if you make the sump/fuge out of an old glass aquarium and pick up a used overflowbox the price can be pretty low as GuitarMan said, for $100 buxes adding say 20-30 gallons to your system and a working fuge is worth it to me.

Adding a fuge into my 20G was the best thing I could do. My tank has become more stable, my anemone doesn't deflate daily how it did before and my nitrates are dropping fast. Adding more water volume also means more stability in your system, which is the best thing you can do for your pets. :)
