ok i want sea horses but they are very expensive. so i remembered our friends at cramerscarribeancritters.com i went there and they had a pari for 15.00 and shipping was only 14.00 so 29.oo for a total. the only catch is that they are wild caught. i know that this means bad things for these guys but what do you guys think i should do? in my lfs they sell them captive bred for 40.00 a piece! i dont want to spend that money if i dont have too. thanks all!

Sea horses are a big commitment. I'm sure you have heard that over and over again...and I hope that you plan on putting them in a species only tank. (I'm sure you've heard that too!) If you've done your research and everything and you feel confident that you can successfully keep sea horses, I would say go for it. BUT I would go with the captive bred ones. And plus they are at your LFS...you don't have to deal with shipping. Honestly if you don't want to shell out the cash in this hobby, you could get into some trouble!!

EDIT: I just read your other post (should have done that first). Sea horses require utmost attention and if they aren't given that...they suffer. There are people who have been in the hobby for 15+ years and they still won't touch sea horses. Also many won't touch anemones because of the risk they hold. Now, with sea horses its not so much a risk but the difficulty to keep them. I would say if you can't keep a lion fish...I would stay away from sea horses:( I'm sorry, maybe other people will chime in and say go for it...and the last thing I want to do is sound mean. But I'm just giving you my opinion!!)

I too would love to be able to keep a seahorse tank, but its the difficulty and cost to provide the right habitat and food thats the problem, not the cost of the livestock.I once read an article in Coral magazine written by Rudie Kuiter and he stated that seahorses are not hard to keep. You just need proper water quality and food. His tank was an 80gal. setup that was connected to a 600gal. reef tank.

if i were to do this i have an extra filter that is big enough to double as a fuge for them. i would seed with pods then wait a while then add them. thanks to all and i will make sure i think of everything before we buy them.

First off that shipping is 3 day air...thats your first mistake, those will not live being shipped 3 day air. second, for your first time with sea horses i would NOT go wild caught!
