If I were you, I would buy all base rock either all at once when you have the money, or in various purchases. With base rock you will know exactly what your getting, no nuisance algae, pests etc. It is also much cheaper than precured live rock. I also recommend checking out the internet for buying it. I suggest bulkreefsupply.com. It's only about $3 a pound plus shipping, but I bet it will be much cheaper than paying $8 a pound. As already mentioned too, you don't need any "live" rock, just cycle the dry rock. If you worried about coraline, which I don't get what the hype is, it will come, even if you don't use any live rock to "seed" the tank. It comes in on coral frags, snails, hermits and basically anything you add to the tank. I hate the term "seed" the tank, it seems to be very misunderstood.

If your in no hurry, which you state your note, def go with dry (base) rock, I went with the pukani from BRS and im extremely pleased. I got way more than I expected, and since its dry you dont have to pay rush shipping ( i got it in 2 days anyways ) and its something like $3 a pound.
