I'm almost 1 year into this hobby and i knew there would be up's and downs to it.. for the most part it's always up's but at the end of the day it's up to you.. as the saying goes you can look at the tank half empty or half full

i dont think so, i have seen tanks at below 7 not do whats happened to yours. i turn my skimmer off for 2-3 days a week and have no issues without it.

    1. Not my tank

    2. Normally, turning off the skimmer should not be a problem. However, when the pH is already swinging a large amount, it can become one. Especially depending on how fast it swang(? lol).

    3. The pH swinging below 7 can definitely hurt the fish to the point of death, you're lucky to make it through that kind of experience with your fish. Also, anecdotal evidence does not a fact make.

I feel your pain, but don't give up! I just started all over again as well. You already have everything you need so it's just down to a little work and your off again. Take this time to try & learn what went wrong and change anything you've been wanting to change now.

im sorry to hear about your wipeout, something similar happened to me a few years ago.

However you shouldnt ask other people if you should quit the hobby! You have two choices here, give up and be defeated or dust your self down, fix the problem and build an even better tank then before with out all the niggly mistakes you made first time around!

    Choice is yours dear

One thing I have noticed is we have no info on his current setup.(or I missed it)
    How big is the tank,
    how many power heads,
    sump fudge?
    filters?

this info would greatly help determining what might be the issue with your ph swings.

also sorry to hear about your fish loss.

    Thanks for the support guys

It sort of is...I have a powerhead which i turn off with a timer at night (since i thought it needs to be quiet in there)... maybe i was wrong  :(

I am not sure if a canister filter provides any sort of oxygenation whatsoever coz it was working the whole night. I dont run a sump coz there aint any space below in the cabinet..I have just got a overflow box so i might try to fit in a small refuge soon..maybe that will help some air exchange as well

I dont see any parameters out of place...I have a salinity+pH meter..pH was running at 8 in the morning when i woke up...There is no ammonia, nitrites and nitrates are at 10...But i wouldnt understand what else could have gone wrong...

Just wondering, can the carbon in the canister filter increase the carbon content in the water? does it happen that way or is it just a filtration method?

You are right bro..coz that shows that there is high amount of CO2 in the tank right? Atleast thats what i understood from the link posted by Crimson

One other thing was the fish remaining at the top of the tank gasping for air?.. if so i would say it was a lack of GE that did it and not low PH

I understand mate but i have been enjoying this hobby ever since i started it..I knew it could be a challenge and i was ready to accept it just because i was very confident in handling discus (which i consider to be one of the sensitive fishes...I even breed them..My friends ask me to drop at their place to check and advise for treatments etc)...But this sudden swing has given me a think again bcoz i have read lots about having the ocean's fishes killed at our home which is unacceptable...Such wipeouts keeps you wondering about such aspects

But my wife is with me on this one and she says that we need to learn from our mistakes and just kick the but* out of these mistakes

    Thanks

All mentioned in the above post

If you are depending on a skimmer to give enough oxygen to keep your fish alive, then you are very overstocked. This also happened at night when the fish were using the least amount of O2.
