Yah i forgot to mention this (or did i? )...Well the only fishes remaining were the snails, 1 clownfish (on top gasping like you mentioned) and 1 watchman goby  .. i was like how on earth did he survive...he was at the bottom and still running and looking for food...

The others which survived were turbo snails and Sand sifting starfish

    What is GE?

im so sorry for you loss, but dont give up. you enjoyed the tank and will miss it if you give up. like another said learn from it. i do know how you feel. i didnt think of tank temperature on one of my first tanks a fresh water tank during a very hot day. lights were on.temp went near 90... :( well i cooked some of my fish. some were burnt and made it threw i felt horrible, it was so sad. i did learn from it though and always watch temp now.

saltwater tanks can run without skimmers. i know i did it and will never go without a refug again. refugiums are the key. lights on at night when the top lights are off. it keeps a very stable ph. also not a good idea to turn off surface agitation always leave that on.

GE = gas exchange.. Happened to me when i was changing the top frame on my tank due to a broken brace.. had the water half way down for under 24 hrs had to let the silicone cure before i could put back my HOB skimmer and i forgot to add a air stone in the meantime.. My maroon clown and blue devil damsel was gasping for air at the top but both my engineer gobies never did and both still lived.. As soon as i added the air stone the fish within 10mins was back to normal I really beleave it was the lack GE that killed them if the skimmer was the only source of air into the water.. may I add my PH at one time was 7.8 and adding one power head to one dead spot in the tank ( behind the rocks) brought it up to 8.2

These lines somehow very clearly depicts my issue as well...let me read these over and over again...

Edit: but how did you add a powerhead behind rocks? and how did that help with the pH...i think the answer lies somewhere in here
