I've got a cycling tank that had 3 snails in it (and 1 hermit). 2 snails died last night . Should I remove them? (I'm thinking yes).

I'm going to test my water in a minute, just wanted to ask so I could read the answer after I test the water :)

No just leave them in there.. their shells will be recycled by the next bag of hermits as new homes .

The rotting snail corpse isn't a concern?

I doubt it makes a difference, but they're both on their shell back, one is fully, um, sucked into the shell and the other is partly sticking out...

As cuttingras said, the hermit should it them, but it will also help with the cycle.

Nope not a problem many toss in shrimp or prawns to rot for cycling I don't But many will and the snails like mentioned what they won't or can't eat will just add to the ammonia to keep cycling going along and if the system is cycled then the little ammonia and nitrites that is produced will be converted to nitrates as they are supposed to be.. God I have hundreds of dead shells in this tank I assume the snails all died one way or the other :)

I think it probably would have been better to base a decision on the size of the tank. Two snails in a 75gallon I wouldn't even blink. Two in a ten gallon already cycling and I would remove them. Same goes for what kind of snails. Two nassarius aren't going to have the same impact as 2 mexican turbos. There is still life in the tank afterall that you do want to have pull through the cycle.

OK - It's a 55gallon. Total 3 snails - 2 of the 3 died. As an update, the one I mentioned was hanging a bit out of it's shell, I moved it to a LR and a minute later it took off! So that's nice. The other is still dead. So we're now only talking 1 dead snail.

I have no clue as to the type of snail, I will post pics this afternoon. I've been trying to identify them, but I can't seem to tell the difference on google images :-/
