Thanks for the advice guys... One confusion about the cardinal fish - every time I've ever seen them, they've been in groups, but the thought was that they shouldn't be... Can anyone clear this up? Is it just more than one mated pair perhaps? If I got some, I'd probably get a mated pair...
Any other schooling fish that you guys would recommend?

Where are you seeing this, at your lfs? If so, you can never assume that fish can be kept long term in your tank like they are at the fish store. It just doesn't happen. Only juveniles stay in large groups without fighting. What tends to happen when adult cardinals are kept in groups in an aquarium, one male and female will pair off and systematically kill off all of the other cardinals. If, and that's a big if, you have a large enough tank, this probably wouldn't happen.

Seen the Cardinals at lfs, aquariums, and pictures. Just saw them at the big aquarium out here - kind of liked the fact they just "hovered" in the light - they are pretty cool fish. I'd probably stick with the mated pair or 1 if I got them.
Any other suggestions for good schooling fish where I could get 3 or 4?

If you're dedicated enough to their feeding requirements, you could try your hand at keeping anthias.
