Personally I think it's best to point the return in a direction that would optimize the flow throughout the entire DT.

If you point the return toward the overflow, you're just going to be circulating a lot of the same water through the sump which won't do your DT much good, so yes, it kinda does matter.

If pointing your return at the overflow causes the same water to circulate through your sump and the rest of the water just stay in your DT, then your flow in your DT is in serious need of an upgrade and you should be looking at some more powerheads. You should have a turnover rate of at least 10x per hour, and this means via powerheads in your DT.

I like to make mine point up to keep the surface agitated. Also helps to keep solid organics flowing towards the surface. Doesn't make much sense to throw that water back down into the sump'...

I have mine just as surface agitation. I'm only running about 150gph through the sump and the rest is power heads. Your powerheads should provide enough flow to suspend particles and such until they get caught in the overflow vacuum.

Agreed it does matter.. If you have a return flowing directly torward your overflow, you are defeating the purpose of dispersing your treated saltwater. What I mean of treated is water that has been gone through your refuge is you have one, skimmer, any dosing, and then pumped back into your display tank.

Below the water line, the return water is pushing waste & other used up water away from your overflow. Thus defeating the purpose of what it was intended for "dispersing".
