should this be telling me something?

The green algae that collects on the glass all the time that we mag-float off...

When I look in through the side at the front glass, it is green.

the past 2 days I have noticed it is white.

    Should that tell me something?

Due to some new additions I have dropped my light period down and have been raising it back up... maybe that is connected?

Gotta say, that's a new one. Mine has always been green. Any chance it could be sand? Undissolved salt?

Bump for anyone else that might have an idea.

I've had that happen when I've raised my lighting cycle after getting new lights. It did go away for me after a little bit.

looking at how it behaves when my mag float goes over, i'd say it's the green stuff...

it is very odd to me too.

my pics of it are not coming out. trying to take a pic at back of front glass through the side glass just isn't working. :-/

do you drip kalk? i thought i read somewhere that you can end up with white residue in your tank but that's not normally on the glass. i dont do it, so i really dont have any clue. about the only white thing i would think it would be is some calcium byproduct of some sort

Some algaes will turn whitish as they die I believe. Maybe there aren't enough nutrients to keep it alive, or maybe it's just similar to algae and is actually a bacterial film or something.

I cleaned the glass last night and the white film is back.

No, I do not but I do autodose Ca and Alk solutions from BRS. I have had stable readings for over 6 months. Not a bad thought though z, thanks.

You know, my skimmer barely skims now adays and I have had 0 nitriates and phosphates for around 8 months. A very low fish bio-load (2 clowns and 1 blenny) and I only feed lightly... this sounds like a possibility to me.

Another reason to add a fish... as soon as I can find something I like that won't be a pain...

in the meantime, this is just weird.

Well, it could be the algae dying. I had some algae turn white when it died, but I've never had the film algae do that, that I know of. It could also be a precipitate of Ca and alk. I had this happen when I overdoses a bit. It came off with the mag float, but was much harder then the algae, kind of like scraping coraline.

    you got me thinking GM...

I did just have to dose Mg because it dropped to 1410 (I normally keep it at 1500).

    My typical readings are

    Mg ~1500
    Ca 440-460
    dKH 12-13

I noticed Mg was at 1410 on Mondays tests and that Ca was at 400. I assume Ca drop is due to Mg drop (though it might actually be my new clam).

Usually when Mg drops, my Ca drops and when I dose the Mg, my Ca is back on target. I ended up having to dose Mg twice to get it up and plan on running tests tomorrow to see where I am at.

Mg should be back on target. If Ca is still low, I'll have to dose and (for the first time) adjust my autodosing timers to give a little extra each day...

anyway, w/the Mg drop, this very well could be a Ca precipitate (though my water is crystal clear).

I'll keep an eye on this as I adjust my params back and see what happens.
