Just take an ugly piece of LR out of your 40 gallon, (assuming you have some LR in there) to put in the bucket with your diy rock and dead shrimp.

The Bactria that you want for your tank to cycle live in and on the live rock and sand and filter. If you do not have any of these in your water you will not be cycling anything, you will just be wasting your time.

So, shrimp in salt water produces amonia which sits there, stinks and does nothing because there is no live sand/live rock/filter media bacteria to get it past the amonia --> nitrite stage ?

Nope....airborne bacteria will eventually land in this water and populate the rock.

A piece of LR or a scoop of LS will speed up the process substantially but it's not required.
