Does your LFS have any kind of guarantee? If it has only been a day they may take it back if you bring a sample of your water for testing. 1.020 is very low for shrimp, it seems like 1.024-25 is the sweet spot.

Yeah but the water sample will be at 1.020. I wouldn't give a refund on a shrimp unless their water was at 1.024~1.026.

Although, some stores, depending on how often this occurs with a customer, will give them a partial refund. Something is better than nothing.

I would love to know how he was acclimated to the tank cause shrimp can't just be tossed in. I learned that hard lesson with a blood shrimp.

How long did you acclimate it for? Shrimps and stars are very delicate as far as introducing it to a new tank. They need slow acclimation. 1-2 hours of a slow drip.

I have to disagree with the drip method being the only way. I float the bag then add about a shot glass of tank water to the bag every 15 minutes for about an hour. I have yet to lose a shrimp.

    Oh, that explains everything.
I introduced a star to my tank over 6 months ago and I only aclimated it for 30minutes and then it died, straight away. Same thing just happened to the shrimp.

Maybe ill try again in a couple of weeks. But maybe this time Ill aclimate it for 2-3hours and have a salinity of 1.024.

    Thanks.

Invertebrates are EXTREMELY sensitive to heavy metals. What type of water do you use? I lost a cleaner this past weekend as well. Mine died about 6 hours after putting him in the tank with my maroons. He ended up becoming lunch for my puffer. I normally wouldn't do that, but it's nature right? Well, I noticed that one of the magnetic algae cleaners that I am using to mount my Seio pump to was leaching rust into the tank. Word to the wise, make sure that you use a quality magnetic algae cleaner and do routine cleanings on those to make sure they aren't rusting like mine. The magnet under the felt scrubber was completely exposed and not sealed.

well i have acclimated a fire shrimp the bag method with a shot of water every 15-20 min for an hour and dropped it in (now, i also knew that my LFS had a salinity of 1.024, mine being at 1.025-1.026 this was pretty minimal)

i bought a cleaner shrimp from a shop that had a 1.022-1.023 salinity and i did the drip acclimation for two hours to raise it to my 1.026.

i got a peppermint to eat an aiptasia, which it did, but with this one i didnt do anything beside bag temp acclimate and a couple shots of water over a halfhour timespan and its still living to this day.

i use RO/DI water for everything. not sure what you use, but this is my acclimation processes for all three shrimp and none have died.

however, the fire shrimp i thought was dead after the first hour of being in the DT because he molted and i didnt realize when a shrimp molts it molts a duplicate copy of itself including antennae.
