I have had this YWG in my 29g for over a year and hadn't added a shrimp. A tiger pistol caught my eye the other day, so, I added it. As soon as I added it the YWG was hovering mid tank and looking around. A few minutes latter, I saw puffs of sand coming out from under a rock and a few minutes after that, the goby had moved over to the rock. I don't think I've ever seen a goby and shrimp pair up so fast! Here are some pics, after they settled in. Please excuse the dirty glass, my 29g, is sort of like a "refugium" (without the refuge) to my big tank and I honestly haven't been putting as much work into it as the big tank.

Very awesome!! It took my shrimp and goby about 2 months to find each other in my 29g Lol! I eventually got tired of waiting and lifted the rock the goby was living under, scooted him over to the rock the shrimp was living under, and since then they've been a match made in heaven. It's so funny to watch the shrimp play with his rock collection, while the goby tries controls him like a parent does a child. Very fun to watch, one day I think I want a tank with many pairs of goby/shrimp combo's. They are just so cool to watch together! Even though all gobies just look super grumpy!

Btw I've never seen the pistol shrimp eat, so I assume he get's his nutrition from what he digs out of the sand?

    Congrats on the pair m2434!!!!!!!

That is great news!!! They look very happy together. Ash the Goby should feed the shrimp for you so if you can get him a large piece of food he will share it with his little shrimp buddy!!;)

I just read an interesting article about these pairings. The author had two pistol shrimp and two gobies in the same burrow. He set the tank up so he could see the bottom of the tank.Hence he could see into the burrow. His gobies mated in the lowest chamber. The female laid the eggs then the male entered the chamber and intentionally caused a cave in blocking the entry to the lowest burrow. He then fertilized the eggs and gently aerated them for a short time until they hatched. He then dug his way out to free himself and the fry. Very interesting stuff!!!!!

i currently run my 29G BB and the only reason I would ever run sand is to have Goby's. But I just can't bring myself to add sand to the tank I like the look of the sand but I don't want to deal with the mess of adding it. Well that and now that I have the tank running with a few inhabitants I don't want to disturb them with adding sand.

The pics are awesome congrats on them pairing that quickly.
