i no you are supposed to leave your systems running 24/7 but what would happend if every night you shut down your skimmer and return pump and powered it back up in the morning....keep in mind you leave your heater and powerheads going.
I use to shut my skimmer off everynight before bed because it kept me up at night and i never had any issues.

I just set up a new 125 gallon in place of my 30 gal... now i have an overflow, skimmer and return pump going and its alittle loud seeing as i sleep 5 feet from it..so will be shutting it all down at night before bed. I have alot of corals and fish.

I think everything will be fine..what do you think????

Would you be able to stop water from going into your sump from your overflow?

ehh i wouldn't. the skimmer being gone could cause a drop in pH because of less oxygen. Without the sump going you wouldn't have filtration at night sooooo..... id say no.

sure..i just have to add in a shut off valve witch is no big deal..but the skimmer is loud and i would still have to shut the return pump off if i stop water from the overflow.

no, because the only water your skimmer will be affecting is the sump. your tank will remain filter-less.:p

Another concern I would have is the drop in temp in the sump. Once you power back up, you're going to pump a lot of cold water into your DT. I second the motion for buying quieter pumps.

BTW, once you turn off the return pump, the water will stop flowing through drain (unless you're draining from the bottom of your DT instead of the top). :p

Grrr! I have this same problem, my overflow is to loud and the pumps exaggerate that noise into a gurgling hum making it almost impossible to sleep w/o shutting down
