I have a green open brain trachyphyllia - that until very recently was doing great. Then I saw the rabbit fish started to nibble - it looks as if a small piece was taken out. It closed up yesterday and has been like this since - over 36 hours now - its as shrunken as it can get. I then moved it to my sons Red Sea Max tank where the lights are not as good, but no rabbit fish.

So is this common for the Open Brain to close like this ? Any thing to be done to help recovery?

beeing bitten probly would keep it closed for a few days then moving probly didn't make things much better did you make shure to aclimate between tanks

and how long has it been in the other tank (without rabbit) give it a couple of days at least before it starts to poof back up

Its only been overnight in the new tank - so more time will be given. In hindsight I should have given more time in acilaming between tanks - just 30 mins for temperature.

Some further points - are rabbit fish (fox face) considered reef safe for LPS / clams?

I'm not sure if I should return rabbit fish back to LFS - my confidence in keeping him is down. Any ideas on how to stop this repeating if I return the open brain back to main tank with him there? Otherwise hes back to the LFS (a pity since I really got to like him).

    Thanks

It's a bit of a toss up. I had one that nipped at my zoas/gsp's. Luna had one that was giving him problems also...
My guess is that the continual grazing makes them tend to test things out. Macro and nori keep them more occupied. I took mine out of my reef tank.

You did fine. temperature acclimation is all that's needed for corals as they don't fall to osmotic shock like fish do (osmotic shock is caused from change in salinity) and they aren't as ph sensative as most starfish, clams, cukes, things of that nature. The bad thing is, is once trach's start to go down it's difficult to get them back IMO. Hopefully it will pull through tho.

rabbit fish are a toss up and can be reef safe with caution i would send the one you have packing if it is picking at corals though

as for the tank the brain is in now try and keep the water as clean as possible and if you see it extend its feeding tenticals give it some mysis or other food to try and help it along bout the only thing you realy can do other than get it some better lighting
