So I work at Petco and we got some new fish the other day. We have had this sailfin tang for the last 2 weeks and he has been doing great. I run the saltwater department and we where supposed to get our fish order in on thursday so I could acclimate them and put them in the proper tanks. Well it didn't come and instead came yesterday when I was off. We got this Raccon in, and one of the girls at my work put it in with the sailfin. she says they where friends all day, then today I found the sailfin laying against the filter. He was breathing but could bearly move. I put my hand in the tank and he could hover in the water but makes no effort to run from me. I think the Racoon did something to it. When I put my hand in the tank to clean it, the Racoon changes colors and hides in the corner. I moved the Sailfin in with a small blue tailed tang, but he is still in really bad shape. Is there anything I can do?

The sailfin a few days ago, when it was healthy.

I am sorry but it isn't a Racoon. It is a Fox face Rabbit fish. Ive been doing so mush research for my tank latly, all the names are mixing together, hahahaha. I will fix my OP.

But anyways, About five minutes after he gets like that, he is fine and swims around very activly. But the sailfin is my main concern. Anyone know what I can do?

Also, at one point I saw this thick kind of slime come off the Fox face. It almost looked like it sheaded its skin.

k the foxface they are notorious for changing colors so this is normal. Dont worry about the fox face he is a very hardy fish and im sure its fine.. just leave it alone it will color back up.

The sail fin.. is probably really stressed.. sail fins and foxfaces can get along just fine. Its probably under a lot of stress, i would turn the lights off and stay out of the tank.. put some rocks in it too for him to hide behind cause tangs need hiding spots.

Ok, cool. I did turn out the lights and moved him to a tank that had alot more rock in it. I new the foxface was fine and I read online that they change colors, but I had never heard of one shedding a slime before. I didnt know if the foxface had some how poisoned the sailfin. I guess I will find out tomarro morning how he is doing. He looked in bad shape when I left work. I had to be something with the foxface thow. He was doing really well for 2-3 weeks untill the foxface was put in with him. And I know my levels are perfect and we clean the tanks everyday, so he is kind of used to me shoving my arm in there to scrub away algae. Now that I think about it, maybe one of the turbo snails could of had a hitchhiker that got him sick. The girl also threw like 15 medium-large turbo snails in there. One of the snails even had a couple small yellow feather dusters on his shell. But I know the feather dusters didnt hurt it. I was going to buy the snail, but a customer beat me to it.

But thanks again for the help

sorry i forgot this was a help thread got side tracked.

the foxfaces fins are poisoness. its possible the tang brushed up against the foxface, the holding tanks in petstores arent very big.

so thats something to remember when yall catch the fish for a customer

Thanks, I new not to touch the Foxface. The holding tank is 10G, so yea its a bit tight. I did see the sailfin and foxface getting a little to buddy buddy. Is it possible for the sailfin to survive being poisoned by the evil foxface? Is there anything I can give him to help him out?

i don't think there is anything you can do if it did happen.

but i probably wouldn't keep foxfaces with other fish, in a 10g display especially with them being newly brought in.

yeah fox faces especially in a 10 g should probably only be kept with other predator fish like a trigger or lion fish. Tangs probably arent gonna be happy with them.. I had a Fox and a clown and a yellow tang all buddy buddy for a while.. the fox and tang would follow each other everywhere and never be more then 7 or 8 inches away from one another.. but this is in a 80 gallon.
