Ok gang, as you know, I got the plumbing wet last night. while all is flowing and not leaking (badly) at this point,I do have a bit of a noise issue in the overflows. Im tinking of doing a pair of stockman style silencers. I have room for a Durso, but would like to try the stockman if possible. Here is what im thinking.

I have 1 1/2" bulkheads, so I will use 1 1/2" pipe all the way up with a 2" slip connector for the "bell" do you think this will handle roughly 1500 gph per pipe? (yea I know.. I gots alot of water.) I can always valve the main pump back. Its amazing the ammt of water this system is moving. currently im guessing im somewhere close to 4000 GPH total now and will add about 1000 gph when I get the barracuda back up.

Let me know your thoughs on the pipes, or if you have a different idea for silencing the overflows.

I use the hofer gurgle buster in my overflow box and it works pretty well. im not sure if it can keep up with the flow your talking about though.

yea, thats what im worried about.. I was thinking that if it works for the small ones, just oversize it for hte larger.

yeah, thats what i was thinking too. Build it bigger and it should flow while staying quite. Im probably going to follow this and see what happens. good luck

Just curious but why do you want that much flow through the sump? Why would 2000GPH be better than say 900GPH? IMHO it should not be much more than the skimmer throughput. Moving that much water is going to be hard to keep quite plus a waste of energy. If you are looking to increase flow in general, more/bigger powerheads are more efficient. Less electricity, less heat, and less noise.

BTW love your build thread. Going to be one sweet setup.

I went the airhose/styrofoam way. I cranked it to 100% almost and no noise what-so-ever.

I'm running 2 of the duro style to keep up with my hammerhead...now while the pump is making 5600 only about half ~2500 is going to the DT. Most of this flow goes through the standpipe into the sump with only a portion (the second duro) going into the refugium.

The balance is split up between the skimmer, chiller, carbon & gfo reactors.

The duro is very quiet, as well, I build a "bubble buster" to go in the sump to tackle that area as well.

I went with two hoffer units. ended up inverting one and now it is dead silent. works great now. I did have to cut the pump back due to a bubble issue in the outlets, but once it slimes up, im sure i could turn it back up. im guessing i have about 1800 or so going thru the tank.
