Has anyone ever seen this done with the over the back type pvc overflows? I've been drawing some sketches, think I may have the full syphon one figured out. Hard to figure out how to get an automatic full syphon that can restart itself.

I think the emergency one the person talks about with the airline tubing is actually how I would get the full syphon one going. Seems pretty cool though and having a few back up plans would be awsome. I've already had one scare, my damsel passed away (r.i.p.) and was caught on the net gaurding my overflow pipe. Found it in the morning with the water about at the bottom of my trim, luckily was enough flow around him that the water didn't go too high.

Oh and don't read too far into the thread, it literally just becomes like 30 pages of people arguing about who came up with the design.. Awsome design none the less.

I guess it would help to have the third one, but mine works just fine with 2. sorry I missed the question, I have seen some hob overflows the use an small air pump (I think it's an air and not water pump) to keep it running smoothly.

I've seen the one with an overflow box, but I have a pvc pipe overflow. Trying to figure out a design that would work. And I would probably only do two pipes, one full syphon and one to trickle off the excess water.

    The box design:

as I sit her listing to my system, I have to admit it's not completely quiet and I do need to fiddle with it a far amount. I mean it's not much louder than my canister filter, but it's there. I think if I was going to do it again I would go ahead and do the 3 set up.... :idea2: maybe I'll just try to set up my second one with a vent like that one is.....mm but then it would not make up for the flow if things went wrong.... ok I'd go with all 3 when I really think about it. Thanks for getting me to look at this a little closer.

Not sure I get the question. A herbie or a bean has been around for a long time. Bean still answers questions in that thread. Herbie has been gone for a while.

Both are for silent designs and due to their design need other safety measures thrown in. A fish in the overflow can be dealt with in other ways to keep critters out. Although Beans design would pretty much never get clogged unless you have a whole schoal in the overflow. The overflow is just that... a overflow. There is nothing to get started and it does not rise and lift water over the back of the tank. It is a totally custom job and needs 3 holes drilled in the tank.

I'm not sure what you are saying either. Do you have a Herbie that is not silent??? It just needs to be adjusted. If it is just a regular overflow it will not be silent and needs a lot of work to get it quiet. Herbies are silent and so are Beans. If I was going to do a custom tank, I would just settle for a Herbie/Bean hybrid. Basically two big overflows set up Bean style with out the third drain. That is basically a Herbie but a Herbie uses what is already in pre drilled tanks and the smaller hole used for a an emergency drain is a limitation. Two large drains with equal size would be all that is needed.
