Ok, So I was thinking about getting another tank. My lps has some incredible deals on breeder tanks. I had to ask what the difference was for a breeder tank, and was toldthat it is longer wider, and more shallow than a standard tank of equal gallons. My Question is, does anyone have any advice against using a shallower tank as a reef tank than normal? Is there a reason not to use a breeder tank as a show tank? Thanks guys, I know that I will get some quality responses.

i like breeder tanks, for example, the 20 breeder, 30 breeder and 40 breeder are amongst my favorite because their easy to light up and have a bit diferent shape to them. But yes, they are wider, and shallower, making it easy to light up, and making them exeptional growing tanks

my 40 gal, and you can find my video on a previouse thread somewere is a 40 breeder.

But what i mean by growing tank, is that some people setup tanks with optimal conditions to grow corals, and dont really thrive for looks. For example, using the Gyre method of mass water circulation kinda demands you to loose the good looks of a tank. Let me give you an example picture of a growing tank with the Gyre theory in play.

+2 It is a matter of personal preference. A shallower tank is easier to light than a deeper one. :)

Yes like everyone said, breeder tanks are more of a squat tank. Shallow and nice large footprint relative to the capacity of the tank. There is also a 50 gallon tank which is a breeder type and I happen to like. I've never seen a 20 breeder personally. The breeders are almost like cube tanks that seem to be all the rage without the height.

Only thing about them is they might take a little more imagination to aquascape aethestically but it's easily overcome with some creativity.

Here's a good link for some tank dimensions.

I think breeder tanks would be awesome to have for Clams especially! Their ability to capture more light due to the shorter tank as mentioned above is a plus!!!
Also, for fragging purposes, I think that particular tank would be neat to have!!!
Heck, any tank that has fish etc. in it is an awesome tank!!!!LOL
