I read this thread and my situation is the same. I have green algae now consuming on my glass a little but on my rocks a lot. In some places, its like a cm/2 cm green plant. Really weird. The tank has been cycling since April 15, and since then i have added a clownfish and a damsel but i took them out. Thats about 5 weeks. Olmost 6. Anyways, should i get a skimmer? if so a HOB? I have a 20 gallon tank with a 20 gallon sump. I would put the HOB in the sump. Would this be as effective as it being in the main tank? Is a skimmer what you even reccomend? What should i do? My water is also cloudy. I just did a 50% water change. i really don't want to take apart my aquascape to scrub down the rocks. I have plenty of flow in the tank, whats going on? Why is there so much algae?! theres not even any fish in there!!!!!!!!

Read signature to help diagnostic :)

By the way, here is the progress of my overflow. I can not WAIT till it comes so i can get that water circulated!!! sadly it takes SEVEN days to come in ):

I would definitely get a skimmer, and Yes it is just as effective in your sump. You'll be surprised at what it pulls out of the water. I use the AquaC Remora Skimmer, which will handle from a 20-75gal tank. Great Product.

    Good Luck

How often are you putting your hands in the tank... The crabs won't accept an invitation to dinner that way....Are you putting any food in the tank? are your inverts or snails dying? what is the parameters? what type of lights, are they new or old bulbs?

Hermit crabs are usually pretty good at cleaning up algae on rocks and sand (not so much on glass). Have you noticed them grazing at all?
