In a few months I want to throw a 10 gallon tank under my 30G DT. My idea was to use an overflow box to get the water to the sump where I will have my protein skimmer and heaters (nothing else). No baffles, compartments, etc. Just one sump with skimmer, heaters and a return pump. Does this sound reasonable?

Yep. I've seen quite a few setup and thriving sumps/refugiums just as you described. The only thing I would suggest adding is either a sock or some means of debris filtration.

No problem at all. But you might have some crazy micro bubbles in your DT.

What would cause that? Could I slow down the bubbles with a sponge?

Put a sheet of 1" reticulated foam on either side of the skimmer to act as baffles.. the two sheets should seperate the overflow from the DT, skimmer and pump making 3 chambers..

first one acts as debis collection and second reduces bubbles getting to the pump..

No expert but that's what I would do as a minimum.

the problem I see here is the skimmer and its optimal water level. unless you have an ATO, the water level in the sump will drop as water evaporates and the skimmer wont be able to work properly. thats the way i see it... maybe im overlooking something?

    Not a bad idea--thanks!

I'm thinking of doing this sump at the bare minimum; I suppose I could always do a HOB fuge if I wanted later on.
