The new sumps by Siphon Filtration LLC offer true wet-dry filtration thanks to siphon tubes within the sump that will cause the water to rise as it flows in from the aquarium until the siphon 'breaks.' The Siphon Filtratrion sumps feature a protein skimmer chamber that gets 'preloaded.' What this means is as the water level rises and falls in the main chamber, proteins and amphipathic molecules are lifted to the surface until they reach the gate leading to the protein skimmer chamber. This effect has been dubbed the 'preload function' as it raises the level of protein molecules in the chamber. COOL.

Interesting idea, good use of a siphon although it looks like it would be quite noisy in my living room...

I added videos of the Siphon Filtration filter to the 1st post.

Observations/questions - I notice a lot of air getting into the return line. This is probably solved easily, but something you would want to deal with in most cases.

Also I am curious about how the fluxuating water level affects the protein skimmer.

    Very interesting sump.

Typically fluctuating levels in the sump where the skimmer is are not a good thing.

I see what this does, but I don't see the purpose to it. Am I missing something?

    What happens during power failure?

It's kinda complicated so it must be a great product. People are starting to over think this thing badly. Some of the most beautiful tanks that I have seen have been so absolutely simple and now we are getting all of these controllers and cool syphon sumps. Pretty soon ur gonna have to obtain a degree of some sort just to own a fish tank.

I agree, I like the simpler = better approach.

Interesting point, using a valve on the return line would help reduce the air in the return pipe. A larger sump would reduce the fluctuations. A better idea would be to forget using it over the sump and use it as a surge device over the top of the tank using a pump to pump water into it; plus it has the added bonus of being a wet/dry filter. Although I could foresee it probably being too noisy.

Nothing, the siphon box just stays half filled or where ever it was at when the power went off.

I have to disagree it's a very simple idea just utilising a siphon (but I do have a degree so never mind). Although I do agree that the most aesthetically beautiful tanks are the simple ones.
