Looks like they used freshwater for their simulation/video.

I have a degree as well, a bachelor of Science degree, and I still think it is overthinking things.

Now a surge device for the tank, that I like the idea of.

The sump in the video is a prototype. The video was made to illustrate the tidal fluctuations in the siphon chamber and basin chamber due to the siphon tube discharge. There is a separate chamber surrounding both the protein skimmer and the return pump in the standard editions of the filtration system. These chambers serve the function of "preloading" the skimmer and to prevent bubbles from returning to the tank. The chamber normally surrounding the skimmer serves to stabilize the water level within, with only minor fluctuations allowed.
More comprehensive videos will be made available in a few weeks

In the interest of full disclosure, I am associated with Siphon Filtration, Llc.

    I agree.

I see and understand the objective, but I fail to see the point.

A properly baffled and divided sump will maintain levels - the water level in the skimmer chamber won't fluctuate so that it can operate properly. Bubble traps fix the problem of micro bubbles.

This is too complicated for no reason (siphons aren't complicated, but not needed in sump, i.e., too complicated).

I look forward to them as well. I wish I could have stuck around Thursday to see it in action, but, if I stuck around then it wouldn't have been set-up
