I know the former photographer used the camera owned by DD. Maybe the new photographer has a different camera. It really does make a difference. When I got my new camera someone also asked me if I was stepping up the punch. I was not, as I was processing them the same way, the camera just picked it up brighter. The new camera actually showed the real colors more accurately, not falsely.

the former photographer knows so much about photography she knows how to set the camera for light to get a good shot. She now works at a fish store 5 minutes from me. i have talked to her about cameras and color accuracy. she gave me a few tips on setting my camera. She gets how important color accuracy is. She is a very talented photographer.
Who ever divers den hired, clearly is not as good as her.

My response to the original question is I love DD and their size accuracy has been fine.

What I find interesting however is the possibility that this is a problem caused not by inaccurate measurements, but by different measurements. I'm not sure what the official protocol is, but what if, for instance, I expect my fish to be measured from tip to toe and DD only measures body, i.e. ignoring the tail. This would have the effect, for some people, of looking like an overestimation on the part of DD.

What is the proper fish measuring protocol? What does DD do? What do most people expect? I think answers to these would be quite interesting and informative.

The pictures from the new person have been accurate. I'm not sure why we're saying his skills are not up to snuff.

I can contact the person from DD to see how they measure, but I don't know anyone on the Liveaquaria side of it to ask.

    K, I sent an email...

..."Some people were wondering what your procedures were for fish measurements. Do you go by standard length or total length? Or a mixture, depending on the specimen? Do you actually measure with a ruler (or something similar) or is an eye-ball kind of thing."....

Pink, you could also ask Felicia the next time you see her. Tell her Renee from the seahorse place says "Hello!"

I wasn't dogging Felicia, just to clearify that. Her and I have known each other for quite some time. There's some pictures floating around out there of her and I at the IMAC pirate party.... good times.

I was just trying to clarify that the pics on DD are not "pumped up". My specimens have looked just as expected.

    Return email.

"All of the Divers Den fishes are measured with a ruler to obtain the most accurate measurement as possible to list the Total Length. Obviously some fishes are harder to measure precisely, and some of these types include stinging fishes like Scorpionfishes, Eels, Sharks, and any other fish that can either sting or injure my staff, or move about too much to precisely obtain an exact measurement. We surely do our best to accurately list the measurement of every Divers Den fish we offer.

The standard fish categories on the LiveAquaria web site are measured also with the total length, and we do provide a size range where the fish will fall into depending on if its listed as Small, Medium, Medium/Large, Large, X-Large, or Show Size. Seasonal fluctuation is frustrating as this can vary by season and by exporter, but we really try hard to accurately list the correct range for each size category.

Lastly, the Quick Stat information where we list the Maximum Size of a fish is obtained from well respected Ichthyologists, Marine Scientists, or FishBase.org. The biggest issue here is that FishBase and most others list the Standard Length of a fish which is more often than not smaller than the Total Length of measurement which includes the fishes’ caudal fin."

The problem with the fish I buy, is when measuring their total length, some have a larger tail than others. This would mean there would be a wide discrepancy between expected standard lengths. And some, when they get older, gain more body mass and finnage shortens. So they may not change in actual length, but be a total different aged fish. That's why I started relaying on the size of the sand in the picture to get an idea of their size.

Did that make sense at all?

A shame they didn't mention whether they include the tail, etc. Your comments make perfect sense however. I'm not sure, but it may be the case weighing the fish would be a better guide, but none of us would be able to use that information effectively since we can't really visualize it well.

    They did.

    Total length: Tail included
    Standard length: Tail not included
