I have a 110 FOWL system without a protein skimmer. Nitrates typically stay around 20-30, but I would like to improve that with an in sump skimmer so that I could add an angelfish at some point. I don't plan on keeping any coral. What types should I look at? Right now I have a blue tang, a foxface, and two clowns. I don't want to get a skimmer that is too expensive for what I need.

Also, should I invest in a clean up crew, or is that just for tanks that have an algae problem?

    Thanks for your help

Fish produce the most waste, so I wouldnt cheap out on a skimmer. As for a clean up crew, If I where you, I would, even if its a small crew. What would happen if you stopped taking out the garbage? Luna

your current fish won't eat your clean-up crew, so that would be ok and they'll help eat up the uneaten fish food at the bottom of your tank.
How long has it been up and running? Typically you need a skimmer after a few months.
Get any skimmer rated for 125 gallons and up, higher rated than your tank size. Get the best you can afford.
Stay away from seaclone and jebo from what I hear they're junk.
I have a coralife 125 and works great. Many other good brands too, bullet, etc..

If you plan on adding "other not reef-friendly" fish, then just do some research on what fish eats what. In a week a trigger fish or harlequin tusk can wipe out your crabs and snails.

Great. Thanks for the quick replies. In the past, I had just siphoned uneaten food off the crushed coral. I have had the tank running with this bio-load for about 9-months. How should I introduce the clean up crew? Quarantine for a couple of weeks and then just put them in the tank? I don't plan on adding much more to the tank, so I can just add the clean up crew and then research the fish if I want to add more.

I am starting to realize that research prior to setting up the tank would have made the process a lot easier. I'll look for a good skimmer to add.

I don't QT any clean up crew. Just acclimate them and dump them in.
You can also make a coiled denitrator cheap out of airline hose, PVC pipe, and bioballs. That takes a month to break in then works great.
If you're not a DIY guy, you can buy one from Tangster, a sponsor here.

I agree. I have one, moved it from my 38 to my 20 (didn't have a skimmer), and will hopefully remove it this weekend for an AquaC Remora (overkill on my 20, but better safe than sorry).

If you have uneaten food on the bottom of the tank then you are feeding way too much.
The skimmer and lights are two things you should NEVER skimp on with saltwater. They can make or break a tank. I would look into a Bullet 1 or 2 from PM.
