I saw a external that was plumbed so any collection ran outside. Is this possible on all models?

Sure.Just drill the collection cup and add a bulkhead.(Some already have a bulkhead for this purpose. However, most don't have room for a huge collection container and when the container fills up it is likely to overflow.I am sure there are some externals that have the option of allowing the overflow of water to return to the tank and this would be the only way I would run one.
There are many people here who run externals but I don't like the risk involved unless you have no choice.

Well, I have a closet that is behind my tank, so I could have room for a collection container. My current skimmer on my nano has a drain as well, and I have learned that it's better to put that back into the tank. If it's overflowing then odds are something is going wrong, and I drained a quarter of my nano before, so I don't trust the collection container.

I like the look of those, and the size!

Would you think a the 121 would be enough, or should I be looking at the 161? Also, I was reading that the Kone series has the water exit under the base in a way to reduce microbubles, do you know if it is the same for the SM series?

Or the SC 150, which is even less expensive, same basic design.

comes with the Atman 2500 pump.

Check it out, I like mine

It looks like it has a bigger footprint than the skimz, which is why I ruled it out :(

Nice! I actually read that, and was looking into those skimmers (though, it appears you can't find them). It wasn't until I started researching them more did I realize that it was basically a tweaked version of the skimz.

I think if the 161 will fit, I might go with that. I am going to cut a peice of eggcrate to size and see how snug it would look to get an idea. I'd rather overskim then cut it close

You can run an external skimmer in your sump, that way you don't have to worry about the collection cup over flowing

I think the Bubble Magus Nac7 fits that footprint
