I have a couple of questions. I have a 55 gallon Bow Front with 30lbs of live rock and 20 lbs of reef rock. I also have a berlin sump with a quiet one 2200 return pump...

Powerhead - I have one Maxi Jet with the 1600 upgrade on it... In addition i have a return pump from the sump that pump 517gph. Is this sufficient flow??

Skimmer - I have a seaclone for now....I want to put it in my sump but my sump is not deep enough for the J tube. Can i position the j tube down so that the powerhead pump is in the water. Will this have any effect on the skimmer...Yes i know seaclone is not that great.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

flow wise it sounds like you have pretty good flow, I also have a 55 and have one maxijet 1200 with the 1600gph flow rate mod, one stock maxi jet 1200, 296 gph, 1 koralia 1 and my skimmer and hob filter, skimmer has another maxi jet 1200 as a pump.
As for the skimmer question, Im not quite sure what you trying to explain, but my pump is fully submerged in the water, I would think that it has to be, at least the intake to pump the water, Maybe the sea clone is set up differently then mine, I have a Remora HOB

The j tube comes off for in sump use . You connect the pump directly to the skimmer. You will also be alot better off getting a good skimmer. I made the mistake of getting a seaclown years ago and It was a waste of money, even after several mods it doesnt compare to octopus or remora's.

octopus & Aquac are my fav. but they can cost as much as a tank and stand for a good 1. I would say as long as you dont have on that runs on air pump its ok. right now i have an old berlin 250 triple pass it does the job for me.

I think a little more flow would be better. You are most likely going to have some dead spots (areas where there is little or no flow) with nly one Mj and your return pump. I would suggest an additional 1 or 2 power heads pointing in opposite directions of each other. Putting them on a wavemaker is even better.

The downside of a lower amount of flow is algae build up which can be a big pain to get rid of.
