A drip loop is shown in most all instructions (in the safety part; "read this before installing") which few really pay attention to. It is making the cord come down from the appliance and then go back up to the plug, not always feasible. I am not certain a drip loop would help if water is "flowing"/gushing out. If it is a hang on back skimmer and you have it on the display you can drill a hole a little smaller than "air line" tubing and insert the tubing and let the over fill water go to a jug or through the floor to the basement (if possible) to a larger container. The pic here is of mine in the sump and the tubing is routed back to the pre filter.

Don't dwell on what "could have been" but instead think of the positive of the lesson learned and look ahead to a now safer future. Hey, the worst did not happen so thank God for it.

so we filled the skimmer back up, plugged it in, and it was fine, working great like it did yesterday, little to no noise, and little to no bubbles. Guess we just have to watch it

    A point of clarification here.

Swagger87 mentioned a surge protector strip after someone else mentioned getting a GFCI.

Please do not confuse the two, they serve two completely different purposes and a surge protector will not save your life like a GFCI will.

One is to protect sensitive electronic equipment from minor electrical surges, the other protects you from becoming a part of a live electrical circuit. You can usually do without the surge protector unless you have a controller or electronics but you cannot do without a GFCI.
