skimmer debate

what a nightmare all this skimming is.

I am upgrading my 180l tank with a sump, to a reef tank and have been reading the discussions on the skimmers. I have also narrowed it down to the prizm and the seaclone. I have seen both and think they are both good skimmers and both noisey. Im a crap sleeper and the need the quietest skimmer money can buy, what do you guys reccommend?

"Noise" not necessarily just a matter of what skimmer to get...

Type pumps, overflows, etc...all play a much larger role.

Often hard to tell till you get all assembled...

Maybe not what you wanted to hear...but sorting out the myriad of "options" is a big part of this "art"...

I am very "partial" to my AquaC -

Biggest noise reduction I wish I had made was spending couple extra bucks more for the "quietest" cooling fans on the market...

Is that a 180 gallons? or liters?
Why do you want to have a sump then put a hang on skimmer on it.
Get an in sump skimmer. And the skimmer you get depends on how much you can afford because they can get a little high, so are you will to spend $100 to $150 or $150 to $200 or $200 to $300 or $300 and over?

The Seaclone is only rated for 100 gallons aquariums.

 

Im from the Uk so about £150 which is $200 to you guys. My tank is built into the wall (hence any noise makes its way upstairs to the bedroom also no access for equipment) so I run the water in from a header tank which is pumped in from the aquarium so the other way around to the sump. Just thought a hang on would be nice and easy. Do skimmers have to be permanently on, or can they go off during the night

 

My seaclone 150 is fairly quiet.

You can run the skimmer part-time, but they take a little time to prime and get adjusted so be aware of that on restarting your skimmer.  I find it easier to leave it go and clean the skimmer intake weekly.   I empty the skimmate cup as needed two to three times per week.

 

OK so your tank is 180 Liters then correct? which makes it around 45 gallons US right?

If you power them off at night you will find yourself fine tunning it every time you power it back on.

Since you have a sump do you have the room for a in sump skimmers?
What size is your sump?
Do you have a drawing on the tank and sump?
Is the sump higher then the tank or lower then the tank?

 

The sump is higher than the tank and is 40 litres, (18" x12" x12&quot the main tank is 180 litres. I have plenty of room in the sump.
