The pump of the skimmer isn't working. When the electricity goes out some times it will stop working and you have to put your hand in front of the pump (the intake) to get it started again. The electricity went out 2 days ago, and I had to start it this way, and it started working. Today it isn't running and I can't get it started.

The skimmer is a Reef Octopus, and the pump is the OTP 2000 pump at 500 gph.

I really don't want to pay $70 for a new one so I need some ideas getting it started. I cleaned the hose and it is not clogged. I took it apart and cleaned it out a bit. I don't know how to get inside to the impeler. It is currently sitting in a vinegar bath and will try putting it together tomorrow.

Does anyone have experience with this skimmer pump? I need it fixed ASAP because I vodka dose in our tank and the skimmer is an important part for that. Any info would be appreciated.

If anyone knows other companies that make pumps that hook up to a reef octopus, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

soaking in vinegar is a good idea...I would also get to the impeller, and clean out the insides with a new toothbrush or something similar...

How do you get to the impeller? I can see it through the hole that attaches to the skimmer, but I cant see anything to unscrew to get it all open.

My skimmer has been down for 2 or 3 weeks now and my tank seems to have had an awesome pod population just explode in numbers. Just have been staying on top of more frequent water changes and little less dosing. Seems fine, skimmers might be overrated especially if you have a refugium or sump with algae

you should be able to take the covers off and gain access to the impeller. generally, cleaning out the housing and impeller will solve this kind of issue. unless u have a broken impeller shaft, in which case thats like $4.00/$5.00
