alright well thanks for all the help guys! any good ideas of what i should get for live stock? i have 45 pounds of rock in a 40 gallon with 20-30 pounds of sand so i should be good there. i was thinking 1 -2 clowns and some other undecided small fish as well. any ideas? also could i keep a yellow tang in my tank? there is plenty of swimming room with the way the rock is set up. and 1 more thing! should i keep both my filter and skimmer off during cycling or just my skimmer?

Clowns are always a good addition. They are peaceful, very hardy, and add some color and personality when they warm up to you and their new home.

A Royal Gramma is also a good add in. Maybe a Wrasse of some sorts, or 2 Chromis (small schooling fish that look cool in a school). And you could top it all off with maybe a dwarf angel. At least, that's what we are doing in our 46 :D

You could keep one...but you would eventually have to give it to an LFS or other reef tank. They need normally around 75 gallons minimum when fully grown. A friend of mine has a yellow tang in a 29 gallon, and that thing is the most perky little fish in their. He's pretty much the boss hawg of the joint, and the plan was made with the LFS he bought it from that when it gets too big, it's either coming to our tank for a while, or back into the 500+ gallon LFS frag tanks :D That little guy has a good life. Lucky devil.
