well ive had my skimmer for about 10 days now and i have to empty the collection cup every day which is topped off with brown crud which is good but on the other hand my GHA seems to be happily growing. the only change is it seems to be thinner and much harder to pull big clumps off it seems to fall apart in my hand which is anoying for cleaning. any suggestions or ideas on what i am doing wrong or what i should be doing?

You are doing everything right, that is what happens to GHA as it is dying. Congrats

Skimming will help but it's not an end all. There's noting wrong with your skimmer, it seem to be doing it's job from your description. Give it time and make sure to watch what you feed and do regular water changes. If you really want to get aggressive, run some ferric oxide.

Are you trying to wet skim on purpose?

Patience. Keep up regular water change, reduce feeding and heavy skimming WILL remove or reduce your GHA.

Hey there, I had the same issues, but the skimmer will not get rid of the GHA, you need to get a Yellow Tang, and Hermit crabs.
The Yellow Tang cleaned my tank like crazy. I had it on my snails, hermits, and anything it could collect on, but after the Tang....no more GHA. Also, I put some new substrate in. Hope this helps, just by chance it helped me.::)
