My skimmer (Nautilus TE ) is in my sump and is working great. All I did was drop it my sump and adjust slide-able exhaust tube and I was good to go.

After seeing many pics of others sumps I notice some skimmers are on stands (made of egg crate or acrylic) which would change how far the skimmer is above/below water level... What is the propose of that and could I get more/better skimming by raising mine?

    Thanks for any input!:)

On my EV 180 the discharge outlet need to be above the water level in the sump.

By raising the skimmer I can have a greater amount of water in the sump.

Good answer...yes I have the same skimmer and it allows you to have the foot of the skimmer at 9" below the water line in the sump. So by raising the skimmer unit, you can obviously have more water in the sump!

The main reason many set the skimmers up and out of the sump is for more open space in the sump.. As with some skimmer like ETSS I ran and Precision Marine Bullets the discharge on the plenum of the skimmer and they set them up to remove back pressure or hydrostatic head pressure and this allows the skimmer to flow better. But all they had to do is just add a ell and pipe up above the sumps water line to do the same thing.. But just to set a skimmer up and out of a sump for the reason to have more water in the sump like the skimmer might displace a gallon or so empty but once its full and running you are talking Oz's of water displacement and not really worth the trouble I'd say ? I built a rack above my sump for my ETSS 600 then when I went to the Bullet 3 Oh and the main reason I set mine up like this is to allow direct drainage to a waste sewer line..
