So I turned on my skimmer for the first time this afternoon, which is a Reef Octopus NWB3000. Got it in the sump all good to go and plugged it in and it instantly filled up and pump kicked on but it hasnt skimmed anything and the collection cup is bone dry. Any thoughts of anything simple I could have missed.

You need to let it break in. Did you rinse it off before putting it in? It has a film on it when new that inhibits its ability to skim. Also the parts need to build up a slime coat to skim well. give it a few days and you should see it start to skim.

Rinsed it very well. I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks!

Also make sure you have the water lvl set for break in.. on my reef octopus it was 1" above where the neck starts to angle in, which was just below the min water line.

Well to this day still nothing....tons of microbubbles the first few days but now those have disappeared. It will get right up the neck before going to the suction cup and just stop's. It's gotta be something with the nylon air hose from the pump. I bought the skimmer used but the pump was brand new. Is it possible that there is a problem mechanically somewhere?

I just noticed another thread by you. Is this tank newly cycled or cycling? If so you will not see any skimmate because you have little to no nutrients in the tank.;)

Yea it's still cycling so to speak. There's 3 damsels in the tank and have been for about 2 weeks now. I guess I was expecting a little sign of something to go to the collection cup. It's like the bubbles and and everything stops at the neck of the skimmer. Maybe I'm just expecting to much to soon or i'm more cautious since the skimmer is used.

Too soon to see any skimmate. As long as its producing bubbles and you can adjust it there really isn't anything besides a crack that can hurt a skimmer.;)
